Raleigh stated in an interview that when he saw an interesting face, he would draw a circle around it, in his mind, and file it away for use in a future drawing. He loved to draw historical settings with swashbuckling characters. And, he had an soft spot for and an ability to capture the pride and spirit of the common man. In his early career he worked as a newspaper artist. He walked the streets and alleys with his sketchpad to capture the various ethnic neighborhoods of New York City.
