It was the policy of most of the monthly magazines to not allow authors to dictate who the magazine would select to illustrate a particular story. And, for most of the assignments, that Henry received, this was the case. However, there were exceptions. The most popular authors often requested particular artists. When possible, the art directors would try to meet these requests. During the period that Henry freelanced with the Saturday Evening Post he illustrated over 500 stories. During this time he illustrated stories for many of the greatest authors of his time.
